Are you familiar with that feeling of uncertainty or lack of confidence in your own abilities? That voice in your head that gives you a million reasons you’ll fail and a million ways you can fail. The voice that reminds you of your past failures—yes, that voice.

That’s self-doubt. The lack of confidence in oneself and one’s abilities. It’s completely normal, as nine out of ten people experience self-doubt from time to time. But while it’s normal, it can be very harmful if left unchecked.

  • It can hinder career advancement and personal growth

  • It can lead to settling for less than one’s potential

  • It can lead to a lifting of regrets and birthing “what ifs” about unfulfilled potential and missed opportunities.

As said earlier, it’s normal. It’s more common in some people than others, but we all experience it. It’s multifaceted and can manifest itself in various ways, like:

  • Negative self-talk: Do you often criticize or put yourself down?

  • Fear of failure: Are you hesitant to take risks or make decisions because you are afraid of not meeting expectations?

  • Procrastination: Do you delay starting tasks or making decisions due to feelings of inadequacy or uncertainty?

  • Overthinking: Do you spend excessive time analyzing situations, second-guessing yourself, or worrying about potential outcomes?

  • Physical symptoms: Do you experience anxiety, tension, or physical discomfort when faced with challenges or decisions?

If you have two or more of the above symptoms, then it’s likely that you are battling with self-doubt. However, you are not alone. Everyone battles with self-doubt, and there are proven strategies to overcome it. We’ll discuss three proven strategies to overcome self-doubt

  • Practice self-compassion: Treat yourself with kindness, understanding, and patience. Acknowledge that everyone makes mistakes and that it’s ok not to be perfect.

  • Reframe negative thoughts: Challenge negative self-talk by reframing unhealthy and unhelpful thoughts into more balancing and realistic ones. For instance, “I’m a failure” becomes “I made a mistake, but I can learn from it.”

  • Take action and focus on progress: Break down tasks into smaller steps and focus on making progress rather than achieving perfection. Celebrate your success, no matter how small it may seem.

Follow these 3 steps with consistency and watch how you make self-doubt a thing of the past.

Remember, overcoming self-doubt is a process that takes time, patience, and practice. Be gentle with yourself, and don’t be afraid to seek support from loved ones, mentors, or mental health professionals.
